Still works...

Part one was excellent and in part two author Don Nori digs deeper to allow the Lord to bring healing. Suggest reading order: Romancing the Devine, Secrets of the Most Holy Place, and then Secrets of the Most Holy Place Part 2 (all by Don Nori). This power packed combo allowed me to let the Holy Spirit bring healing in so many areas of my life. If you have been through a lot they have a way of reigniting your relationship with Christ.

Timely truths to mature you toward greater intimacy in Him

Secrets of the Most Holy Place, Vol. 2. Come aboard in volume two of Don Nori's book Secrets of the Most Holy Place and you will discover not only God's passionate pursuit of you, but learn the treasures that will unlock your life to a deeper, intimate, Most Holy Place dwelling.
The ultimate fulfillment, Mr. Nori believes, is in doing the will of God. Road blocks however, are sometimes set up in our lives that would prohibit us from reaching the Most Holy Place. The author will share the pitfalls of not trusting God or receiving His forgiveness, or not working through our guilt, fear, and condemnation. Competition and/ or comparisons can steal our journey toward intimacy and our demands and opinions, if we use them to cast judgement, can distance us from hearing clearly the voice of God. The author wants us all to take a closer look at our hearts before trying to point out the deficits in others. He states " In the Most Holy Place, where man sees himself for who he truly is, he throws himself upon God's mercy. He entrusts his life, his future, and his soul to the Lord, in whom he completely rests. Judgement has been removed from his vocabulary and his heart."
When we can get to the intimate maturity level we will respond to His voice(which will become quite clear to us), feel some rejection of man, yet be used as forerunners to lead others into truth.
Don Nori knows God wants permanent restoration of His presence in our lives and a lifestyle of worship that will consume our body, soul, and spirit regardless of the circumstance of life. By dying to ourselves daily, he believes, our obedience to God will supersede how we think about how our appearance is before men. Fasting should not just be thought of as a period of abstinence from food; it is a place where our attitude and lifestyle come into agreement to God's purposes for our lives.
This book will help mature you in realizing what is important to the heart of God. Each chapter is filled with a different theme and all rate as highly important. I highly recommend this book for the serious Christian and know for years to come you will glean truths contained within.

Great Book!

I enjoyed Don Nori's transparency in this book regarding the Spirit of God desiring to live in and through His people, to accomplish His agenda as we allow Him. I really cannot choose just one quote that sticks out to me, because the entire book is filled with revelation and truth. It was a very delightful and insightful read, it was just what I needed at this time.

A PROFITABLE ENTERPRISE

Peter Spufford is an Emeritus Professor in Cambridge, and has been the leading authority on medieval monetary history for a generation; but this book is a labour of love as well as of scholarship. It has a wealth of beautiful illustrations and the text is full of information, much of it new to me.

The Preface is different from most. Instead of merely paying tribute to those who helped, it tells us about the author's trials and tribulations, experienced during the many journeys he made by way of research, during a period of some 30 years. This introductory section is written in a delightfully engaging and personal way, which makes it clear that Spufford sacrificed many family holidays, except that for him it was clearly no sacrifice at all.

The journeys were his library; and during that time, Spufford learned to `read' all over again, not just by looking at places, but by studying the background detail in paintings, to discover the economic realities behind what the artist was commissioned to paint. It is this deep understanding which gives the book such power and authority.

It may even cause the reader to alter his view of medieval Europe. Traditionally, we were taught that England and France became the most powerful and progressive countries of the early modern age because they were politically united in the High Middle Ages. By comparison, Italy and Germany were `late developers'; but if we switch the focus of attention from politics to economics and commerce, as this book does, Italy and Germany emerge as the dominant powers of the Late Middle Ages, long before they were politically united.

In Search of Seekers of Ducats

The distribution business as it was of old still hangs on in some places. In out of the way places like the Karakoram Highway and the old Silk Road, traders are still small nomad-like businessmen struggling to survive in a dangerous world. But that world has gone away for the most part.
This book gives an informative glance at the life of the trader in Europe during the Middle Ages when there was no law, no dependable travel or communications, and every merchant had to live by his wits and sometimes by his sword. It is a collection of facts rather then of entertaining anecdotes and would be an aquired taste. For those that desire to learn however, it is well worth the effort.
As a by the way, one amusing anecdote the author gives is that in Eastern Europe security often looked suspiciously at him taking pictures of bridges. To be fair, that was of course their job, bridges are important for military traffic as well as commercial and if they were a bit more paranoid then Western security would be, it would have been a fine cover. Of course the author might really have been working for the CIA, heh, heh, heh.

Warning for beginners

Well, I hate to be the lone voice of dissent here, but I have major reservations about this book, in terms of the title's target audience.

1). First, it should have been titled "Beginning Java for Programmers". I say this as, for example, Ch 2 problem 10 requires a nested for loop. This is NOT something I would expect a beginner programmer to know, especially only in chapter TWO! Also, p36 refers to being able to do "all the old char tricks you know".
2). Chapter 2 also talks about primitives, typecasting. Typecasting is not something a beginner needs to know at only chapter 2.
3). The editing is poor. Page 65 shows a sample program listing. Turns out this is a completely different program than the downloaded source files.
4). The author (&/or Oracle) should not expect a beginner to learn the command line straightaway from chapter one. I also have the book "Java for Dummies", which is able to explain how to use the Eclipse IDE. Why can't Oracle? This is lazy, IMO.

I am giving this 3 stars overall, with a caveat. This is a 4-5 star book for a programmer who already can figure out the nuances, or if the book's code is wrong, & knows how to use Eclipse. However, a 1 star book for a real beginner who doesn't know any language & the command line. It would be a nightmare for a true beginner.

Too big and at the same time too shallow for a reference

The first impression after reading this book for one day -- it is definitely not a complete reference. Many important points are covered too shallow.

For example, while discussing Properties, the author mentions that this API is sort of obsolete, but he doesn't mention Preferences. In fact, Preferences are not mentioned at all (at least I couldn't find it in the Index). Another example -- StringTokenizer class, for which the author dedicates two pages, but doesn't mention how it is different from String.split, e.g. from the performance point of view. There are javadocs for ArrayList, but it doesn't say how it grows and when it shrinks. I was unable to find some of the important contracts, e.g. what has the higher priority for a TreeSet -- Comparator's 0, or element's equals returning false? Those are rather trivial questions, naturally appearing while reading the book, but unfortunately you'll have to google for it. The author provides virtually no hints about the implementation of the library and the language, which I believe is essential for understanding most of the design decisions. This is absolutely unacceptable for a reference book.

There are two other annoying things:

1. The book is full of Javadocs, I would say 1/3 of the book is Oracle javadocs, which I personally find rather useless. It looks like something completely artificial, added just to extend this (already enormous) volume.
2. The book is very thick, while the binding and cover are very soft and unsubstantial. It had some signs of wear already after one day of reading! If you use this book regularly as a reference, it will wear out very soon.

Having said that, I must mention that some of the topics are covered well, concise and right to the point. For example, I like the way author incorporated new Java 8 language features throughout the whole book. For instance, you will find lambdas and new collection features used regularly in examples. In general, I've got an impression that "Java Language" section is written better than "The Java Library" one.

Finally, it is hard to understand the point of this book -- it is far too huge to be read linearly, and it is not deep enough to serve as a reference. Probably, the best uses for it would be to remind some of the core language and library concepts, and also to learn new features of Java 8.

Adrift programmer finds calling in Java!

A little background:
Started programming as a child on my family's Mac IIGS. I enjoyed freaking my mom out when I would make the computer count forever via an infinate loop.
I self taught myself to program on my TI 83 in middle school, html and adobe photoshop in highschool, css in college, Perl for bioinformatics perposes.
Skip to now... realizing that somewhere along the line I forgot about my love to program so
I self taught myself begginers C++ using TheNewBoston's Youtube tutorial videos.
To sum it all up, I've a sporadic programming background... but nothing substantial in terms of profession/life goals..

Until this book.

This book teaches at the perfect speed, and provides examples in a logical "here is the newbie way that works... but here is a better way...and yet here is an even BETTER way!". So you learn in a very easy step by step way.

Treat this book as you would any math book, and work out EVERY SINGLE example, as well as try to work out what the console output would look like in your head or on paper and check it against the System.out provided (in the text)
And then, after a few chapters, go back and try to do the 'Try This' programs and retake the quizes to keep the info fresh, and see where your streths and weeknesses lie.

Other notes:
I use JavaFX (IntelliJ IDEA) because I plan to eventually make a GUI program.

I believe having a beginners knowledge in c++ has made me understand Java on a deeper level than those without. And this background has enabled me to learn Java faster and more efficiently.
If you have 2 weeks free, I suggest you look up TheNewBoston on youtube and watch his c++ videos at least up until #35 while you wait for this book to arrive, and you will have a better understanding when you start to read this book.

I am also following along with a free "First Course in Java" that is availble online from Berkley College. It's excellent & I highly recomend it!

About the Author
Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo was raised in London and became a Buddhist while still in her teens. At the age of twenty she traveled to India, becoming one of the first Westerners to be ordained as a Buddhist nun. The international bestseller Cave in the Snow chronicles her twelve years of seclusion in a remote cave. Deeply concerned with the plight of Buddhist nuns, she established Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery in India. In 2008 His Holiness the Twelfth Gyalwang Drukpa, head of the Drukpa Kagyu lineage, gave her the rare title of Jetsunma (Venerable Master).

Best book on Buddhism I've read

I have been attempting to practice meditation and mindful awareness for the past year in order to lesson anxiety and depression and I have been reading books and articles on Buddhism. This book is the best thing I have read regarding Buddhism. It is arranged in the form of short chapters dealing with various topics as outlined in the table of contents. Following the designated discussion in each chapter are a few short question and answer segments taken from lectures. The question and answer portions are not really related to the subject matter from the chapter and although the questions are sometimes very specific to an individual situation, they are generally interesting as well. I like the chapter layout because it allows me to read small portions of the book at a time without having to worry about remembering what I was reading about last. I've been reading this book for the past several months and I'm really enjoying taking it slowly and in tiny bits. Her style is very, very accessible and I find her voice much easier to relate to than anything else I've read about Buddhism, which I'm sure is attributable to her being a westerner. Overall, I highly recommend this book.

Some people have a gift for expressing the ineffable in words. Tenzin Palmo is one of these souls. The wisdom and clarity that are revealed through these pages offer profound nourishment that can sustain us through a myriad of human-level experiences and challenges.

When I read a book, what is important isn't only the content or language. What is really felt is the consciousness. If it is true, then it will be true a hundred years from now or at any time or place. Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo has devoted her life to living and sharing timeless teachings with profound compassion.

This treasure of a book is a series of transcribed talks. Though Buddhist language is used, anyone can benefit from Tenzin Palmo's lucid sharing. She invites us to face our suffering, our mental clamoring, our habitual ways with kindness and a deepening wisdom suffused with universal truth. I appreciate that she shares her own experiences as examples in helping us to cultivate a vaster perspective. Highly recommended.

A Gem - Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo Makes the Teachings So Accessible And Relevant

This is a wonderful book for both those new to Buddhism and established practitioners, and it benefits a worthy cause too - all proceeds go to the Dongyu Gatsal Ning Nunnery, which the author founded and runs, in order to offer Tibetan nuns the same access to study and higher teachings that monks typically have.

For those unfamiliar with Tenzin Palmo, she was born in London in 1943, and became one of the first Western women to be ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist nun. She first became known to Westerners through the book Cave in the Snow by Vicki Mackenzie (also a great read), which chronicled her 12 years living in a remote cave in the Himalayas, the last three of which were spent in strict meditation retreat.

Into the Heart of Life is adapted from talks given by Tenzin Palmo in the years since she left her cave in 1988. The book is organized into nine topics, each delivering to-the-point teachings on a topic central to Tibetan Buddhist practice: Impermanence, Karma, or Cause and Effect, Creating Happiness, The Eight Worldly Concerns, Renunciation, The Six Perfections, Lojong and Bodhicitta, Faith and Devotion and Practicing the Good Heart.

Tenzin Palmo’s warm and direct style makes this a valuable book for both established practitioners and those new to Tibetan Buddhism. She brings formal teachings to life by discussing them in modern terms. It isn’t a formal introduction to Buddhism in that it isn’t organized in a linear fashion beginning with the Buddha’s life story or the Four Noble Truths. But because she speaks in such an accessible manner, someone new to Buddhism could definitely read it and benefit from its’ wisdom. Those interested in Tibetan Buddhism will particularly appreciate the chapter on Lojong (mind training) and Boddhicitta. Jetsunma Tenzi Palmo is truly a treasure amongst contemporary teachers, and both her books and continued work to help nuns gain access to higher teachings is a gift to the world of Buddhism.

The best book on writing you'll ever read

I still reread my old copy of Ken Macrorie's Telling Writing that I found years ago. It was lying around my parents' house and was something my sister had gotten for a class she took in college. Luckily for me, I found it, read it, and loved it instantly. It changed the way I write, and really, changed my life. And even though it is ostensibly written for college undergraduates for their composition courses, the lessons in it are timeless and can apply to all writing. The biggest lesson it teaches is this: tell the truth when you write. It's such a simple but effective concept. So often, people write what they think others want to read, rather than what they really want to say. There's much more to this book than this one lesson of course, but each chapter of this book contains a valuable writing lesson. I rarely review books and only do so when one has really affected me, and this one has.

Telling Writing

There are misconceptions everywhere about everything. Writing is no different. We think we need to outline and plan. The most formal proper language must be used. Oh yes, we think editing is boring and not needed.

Uniquely, through writing, Ken Macrorie exposes the heart and soul inside the act of writing. He does this by offering practical encouragement to any one who thinks they can't write. His encouragement led me to understand that the ideas live in my mind, only to be revealed when I attempt to write freely.

Try this yourself. Write a sentence, making an observation of your surroundings. Write it quickly without regard for spelling, grammar, or punctuation. The instant before you write there is an abstraction some place in your mind. It is a mystery until the words are on the page.

Looking for rules, a mechanical way to be a writer? This book is not for you. Seeking the freedom to communicate thoughts living within? Macrorie opens the door. Yes, there are rules, but he teaches their spirit rather than their letter.

This book steps outside the confines of a text book and beyond the structure of a manual for assembling words. Telling Writing opens the door to a writer's heart. Through it Ken Macrorie becomes a friend.

This book will change your life

I have taught writing for 33 years, and whenever anybody asks me to suggest a book that will help them become a stronger, better writer, this is the book I recommend. Macrorie has a personal, open teaching style that welcomes you in and makes his lessons about writing easy to take. And this is true whether you're a novice in a freshman writing class or some one who has been writing for 20 years. Macrorie stresses the absolute basics of human communication, the essentials that too often get forgotten or shunted aside in high school or college classrooms. Reading his remarks about writing is tremendously empowering. You sense that he has found out the truth of good writing and he's willing and happy to share it with you.

I can't recommend this book enough.
