Excellent text about how the brain learns
By Kindle Customer
This text is full of rich information and new discoveries on how the brain learns, as well as the implications for educators. Sousa presents the scientific findings in an understandable way, and offers practical ways this information can be used in working with students. He includes a "Practitioners' Corner" at the end of each chapter with activities and ideas on how to apply the learning to the classroom. As an educator, I have new perspectives of how the brain retains information and learning experiences, how they are transferred to long-term memory, and how deeply exposure to the arts affects the brain and learning. In my current role as a teacher-trainer, I will use the information in this book to develop better brain-friendly professional development workshops for adults. As a parent, understanding the optimal times for children to be exposed to language, motor skills, music and the arts is invaluable. I only wish I had this book at the beginning of my career and when my own children were younger!

It practices what it preaches
By Sam
This book “practices what it preaches”. The author, David Sousa, has designed the layout, format, charts, bullet points, graphs and overall structure to keep the reader engaged, for both right and left hemisphere learners. There’s a lot of helpful, research-based content about how our brains retain, process, store and transfer information.
Examples include the need for good nutrition, the importance of using humor, how the five senses aid in the learning process, and how short and long-term memory work. Good overview of brain anatomy and function, in easy-to-grasp language.
Very practical recommendations for everyday life and a guide for students in graduate level courses as well. In a media-saturated, sound-byte world, it’s good to know how we are wired and how our brains are processing it all. The "Practitioner's Corner" and worksheets at the end of each chapter also are very helpful. The non-students in my family also found it engaging. Recommend it !!!

A Great Resource for Administrators, Educators, and Parents
By Amazon Customer
The topic of the brain can be daunting to even experts, but David A. Sousa’s (2011) book How the Brain Learns is disarming and welcomes even a novice learner to engage in the study of the human brain. Sousa breaks the stereotype of traditional textbooks by utilizing a variety of formatting techniques that not only stimulate learning but create a more memorable reading experience.
Sousa’s text is compiled into eight easy to read chapters. Each chapter begins with a quote, which is then followed by a small paragraph highlighting the content of the chapter. The main body of the text in each chapter is divided into manageable topics and subtopics, which allows the reader to digest the chapter material relatively fast.
The premise of Sousa’s book is to aid and improve teaching and learning. He accomplished this by reporting on reliable research from neuroscience as well as the behavioral and cognitive sciences. Specifically, Sousa sets out to answers a variety of questions including, when do students remember best in a learning episode, to what extent is technology changing the brain, how can humor and music help the teaching-learning process, and what classroom strategies are more likely to appeal to the brain of today’s student? (Sousa, 2011).
The text is both systematic and progressive. It is systematic in that Sousa opens the discussion on the brain by introducing basic brain functions, and progressively moves the reader to more advanced topics like the power of transfer, brain organization and learning, and the brain and the arts. Sousa concludes the book skilfully by moving the discussion to daily teaching-learning practices; how educators can plan lessons and maintain a level of expertise in brain-compatible techniques.
Sousa’s text, How the Brain Learns, is a great resource for anyone in the realm of education from school administrators to teachers, college professors, and parents of homeschooled children.
