A proud return to form for the expanded universe

Absolutely fantastic, in a way that I've been waiting for from the Halo universe for years now. I've been keeping up with all the Halo books (except Escalation, the comics, which are just a pain to keep track of). Some of them have been hit or miss--the last short story collection was extremely solid (even if some shorts dragged on). On the other hand, as many other people have noted, the Kilo-Five trilogy was absolute trash, and I was terrified, from when I saw some of the early reviews for this, that it was going to be the same.

No, it's not. It's genuinely better than the Cole Protocol (the last entry Buckell made), at least to me. Gray Team has a lot more personality this time around, even if some of the timeline components don't make a lot of sense. Specifically, from what I recall and can find, the Human-Covenant war ended in early 2553, but numerous characters reference it ending in late 2552. It's not a huge deal by itself, but for reasons that are made clear in the book, it becomes a bit of a paradox. Maybe it's been retconned, but at the time of this review, I haven't seen that myself yet.

Like some other people have mentioned, the early part of the book (roughly the first half of it, according to Kindle) is more polit-drama and diplomacy, rather than combat or action. After that it starts to pick up the pace rapidly. I love both sort of stories myself, but I figure I should point that out in case somebody's looking for one or the other.

Honestly, there's not much more that I can think of to say: I HIGHLY recommend this book for any fan of the Halo series; unlike some of the others, you don't need to know much about the expanded universe as it is to pick this up and enjoy it. It's fairly self-contained, with some references to other events in the universe, but you don't need to read the Cole Protocol or anything else to be able to understand what's happening.

Really, I just want as many people to buy this as possible: I want 343 to understand what proper writing is like, and the best way to do that is with outrageous sales of the best written books.

Gray Team Is Back!

This was hard to put down. Seeing Gray Team back in action after the loss of so many Spartan IIs was a real boost to the Halo story. I enjoyed how Tobias Buckell made the courage and intelligence of the Surakan citizens and militia central to the success of the battle. Of course, Gray Team helped.

This is the first Halo book I've read that I didn't enjoy. The short story Oasis set up this world and I was excited to see more stories between the sangheli and humans on the planet but the writing in this book is terrible. There's a lot more exposition than story telling. Dialogue didn't really fit the characters. The aliens are just not quite right.

Maybe the best Christian biography ever written

There are many excellent biographies that have been written about the Particular Baptist minister William Carey, but in this reviewer's opinion this one penned by Carey's great grandson Samuel Pearce Carey excels them all. The author does a fantastic job of setting Carey in the context of his times and of showing the many seemingly insurmountable obstacles that stood between him and his vision of taking the gospel to the world. Carey and his friends had to wrestle with the hyper-Calvinism that was running rampant through their denomination, their own obscurity and poverty, hardships within Carey's own family, the hostility of the East India Company, and the hardness of heart of the culture they sought to win for Christ. Yet they persevered through all these hardships, and became living examples of Carey's motto: "Expect great things from God, Attempt great things for God." This is a truly inspirational read that will feed your soul and provoke you to labor more fervently in evangelism while holding the ropes for those who are laboring on the mission field.

It's a great introduction to his life

This classic bio of William Carey was not disappointing. It's a great introduction to his life. I would have wished for more on his marriage to Dorothy (there was strangely very little said).

Freemasonry Enlightened

I am a Master Mason and also a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason so feel qualified to give an opinion, recognizing that other may not share my viewpoint.

Masonry is not for everybody, but this book goes a long way to tell the story in a manner that many non-Mason's can understand. There is very little these days that is "secret" and our Lodge is very open, even having its installations open to the public.

I concur that Masonry is not a religion, but it does reinforce my Christian beliefs, as well as those other religions we have in our Lodge.

This is a good book, not perfect, but well worth having and reading. I am enjoying reliving much of what I learned along the way and seeing how Masons around the globe work.

I recommend this book to those wanting to know more about this great Fraternity, home to many generations of Americans, including a large number of our founding Fathers.

I would recommend this publication to particularily any new Mason or someone considering applying, as being the most complete overview of the brotherhood of Masonry I have found. It would also certainly be beneficial to some of those who have been in Masonry for awhile as a "rusty nail training" piece. The pictures and diagrams included in it are excellent quality accurately describing the rich heritage of the society. While it explains very well historical operative masonry to modern day speculative practice the author is careful to preserve the secrets within the degrees.

What they don't understand

I was originally on the fence as to whether I was going to purchase this book or not, but it was the negative reviews which finally sold it to me. During my short 34 years on the earth, I have seen over and over again that the less people understand something, the more they will try to degrade it, and based on the ignorant opinions stated, I assumed it must be a wonderful book. It is true that the book is mostly pictures. That is because the entirety of Freemasonry is based on symbolism. MacNulty doesn't give the "deep hidden meanings" behind the symbols because except for a general description given at the time of initiation, it is up to the individual to formulate his own meanings behind the symbols. This is an excellent book which gives a concise, accurate history of Freemasonry and an astounding library of paintings and photos.

Humility is the main virtue to help you get to heaven

This is an awesome and faithfilling book on the virtue of humility. The Cardinal who wrote the preface of this 17th century book saids you could spend a year studying this book and still not gleam all the riches it contains about the virtue of humility and how it's lifelong attainment can help weed out all your bad vices or sins and help one get to heaven. I totally agree with him! This book is for those Catholic individuals who are serious about wanting to get to heaven and through God's graces and the sacraments are trying to live down here as close to God as they can and are trying to love the rest of mankind made in the image and likeness of God.It has so much meditation material on each page of book to pray and think about. This book is also for all individuals who want to change their life for the better in living for loving God and loving other people more.

I first came across this book over three decades ago. It is one of those classics that has passed the test of time in hundreds of years. It has never left my possession, although I wore out a few paperback copies and replaced them. The subject matter is clear. The book was written to teach it to us. I have gone back dozens of times to the Introduction of the book, by Herbert Cardinal Vaughn, Archbishop of Westminster, England, who translated the 1903 edition. It was because of this I first read the book. It was because of his advice there that I used three of the books, he recommends there, as he suggested. I believe his is probably the best of all reviews of this work. So let me share a two-paragraph excerpt from it below (of course, the links are mine). Possibly, you will do what I did.

There is a great advantage in using such a book as this for two or three years consecutively as a meditation book. The human mind is so volatile, the character so restless, convictions are so slow in taking a deep and permanent hold on our practical life, that I have always considered that a retreat made upon one idea, and two or three years given to the meditation of one great subject is productive of more solid good than the following out of the ordinary system, which, of course, has it own advantages, commending it to the greater number. I venture even to think that for many persons living amidst the distractions of the world, such as priests engaged in the active ministry, and devout men and women of the laity, who are deeply in earnest about the work of their sanctification, the persevering study of one book for years, such as The Spiritual Combat and a Treatise on Peace of Soul (Tan Classics), St. Alphonsus on [his] Treatise on Prayer, Blessed de Montfort on "True Devotion to Mary," Padre Gaetano on "Humility of Heart," Palma on The Sacred Passion, and certain other treatises which need not be named here, is far more important than for recluses and good people living out of the world. We never get a proper hold of a great spiritual doctrine until we have lived in it and been saturated by it. The soul must soak in the brine until it has become wholly impregnated with its qualities. And is this process likely to be carried out by one who thirsts for variety and is always on the move towards some totally new sensation from the one that at present occupies his feelings? There is the question of breadth, I know, as well as depth. But he who said "Times hominem unius libri" ["I fear the man of one book." The quote attributed to Saint Thomas Aquinas], hit a truth that must be felt by every earnest soul.

One need not fear that the constant handling of one book will dry up the mind, if the topic treated be one of primary importance, and if it be the work of a master on the spiritual life. The number of thoughts and truths suggested by such a book are truly wonderful. It often will happen that far more is suggested than is actually put down by the hand of the writer. But to enjoy this result, you must have put away all hurry; you must have said, "I am going to spend at least a year with this friend; I am going to take him not merely for a friend but for a master and a guide."

About the Author
Dr. Ronald Martella is a professor at Eastern Washington University, teaching classes in behavior management and research methodology. He provides technical assistance to numerous states and districts on schoolwide positive behavior support (SWPBS)/behavior management for students with or without disabilities. Dr. Martella has 150 professional publications. He is an SRA/McGraw-Hill author of a 6-level program (Lesson Connections and Core Lesson Connections) for Reading Mastery Signature Edition and a two-course adolescent literacy program (Read to Achieve). He is co-author of the new digital-, print-, and project-based FLEX Literacy program. Additionally, he has published seven college-level textbooks on behavior management, research methods, and instruction. Further, Dr. Martella has conducted over 150 professional presentations. He serves on the editorial board of three peer-reviewed journals.

J. Ron Nelson, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders. He received the 2000 Distinguished Initial Career Research Award by the Council for Exceptional Children. Dr. Nelson has received over 20 million dollars to support his research, published over 130 peer reviewed research papers and developed a number of behavior (e.g., The Think Time Strategy) and literacy (e.g., Stepping Stones to Literacy) interventions that have been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. About the Author
Dr Paul Seager is a senior lecturer in Social and Forensic psychology at the University of Central Lancashire. His main area of interest is the psychology of deception – why people lie, how they lie, and whether we are good at detecting lies. He has done a lot of media work in this area, discussing all aspects of lie detection. He and Sandi have also developed a training course to improve people’s ability to detect lies. Dr Sandi Mann lectures in Organisational Psychology at the University of Central Lancashire and is a consultant specialising in stress and emotions. Sandi has conducted researh in the field of deception in the workplace and has recently presented a paper on the topic at the British Psychological Society Occupational Psychology Annual Conference. I tell white lies. I admit so. That's why I study this book so as not to be checkmated. Sorry that I dont find this book particularly helpful. To me, the identity/scenario based setting is a minus. The authors' disclaimer "but nothing is 100% certain" in each of the cue table, though true, simply reduces my confidence in what the authors preach, which is quite different from common opinion of whether or not somebody is telling a lie. To save yourself from such a dilemma, I suggest you to give this a pass.

Would I Lie To You is brilliant! I have always been interested in how to tell when someone is lying to me and this book really ticks the boxes. It is easy to read and quite fascinating. The advice is really interesting - I had no idea that I had been using the wrong signs to spot lies all this time! The book has also made me realise that detecting lies is not easy and something to be worked at, but I have really enjoyed finding out how. I found the stuff on how to tell if someone is lying in a press conference - those grieving parents who end up being the killer etc. Great book!

Excellent

In an earlier time, and in a different place, there was once a time of magic--a time of wizards and dragons and elves and dwarves. And, in an unnoticed corner of the world there lived a race of hobbits: a small people with furry feet, and too much common sense to go on adventures. But, when a particularly stable hobbit named Bilbo Baggins is visited by the great wizard Gandalf, he soon finds himself in the middle of an adventure with 13 dwarves, facing ogres and orcs and all sorts of dangers. Is the adventuring life too much for one small hobbit in the great big world? Read this book and find out!

OK, do you have a young reader whom you would like to introduce to The Hobbit? Well, this graphic novel is just the thing! David Wenzel does an excellent job of illustrating the novel, painting the character just like you would expect them to look (unlike some earlier illustrators). Now, the story is abridged, but on the whole, an excellent job was done of turning that book into a graphic novel.

Overall I think that this is an excellent graphic novel, and an excellent adaptation of The Hobbit. My ten-year-old son and I highly recommend it to you!

The fourth paper also led to a Nobel Prize, although for another scientist, Jean Perrin. On the Movement of Small Particles Suspended in Stationary Liquids Required by the Molecular-Kinetic Theory of Heat concerns the Brownian motion of such particles. With profound insight, Einstein blended ideas from kinetic theory and classical hydrodynamics to derive an equation for the mean free path of such particles as a function of the time, which Perrin confirmed experimentally. The fifth paper, A New Determination of Molecular Dimensions, was Einstein's doctoral dissertation, and remains among his most cited articles. It shows how to calculate Avogadro's number and the size of molecules.

These papers, presented in a modern English translation, are essential reading for any physicist, mathematician, or astrophysicist. Far more than just a collection of scientific articles, this book presents work that is among the high points of human achievement and marks a watershed in the history of science.

Finally, the real thing; not just inaccurate verbal metaphor

I am a nonscientist, general reader, but have read many popular accounts of special relativity. I have always felt shortchanged, though, just at the point where things get most interesting. I think that is because the real physics does lie in the equations, and verbal metaphors fall short. For me, here, for the first time, I see where the science is: just beyond the metaphors. Although I do not follow all the math by any means, so it is partly like listening to a foreign language, I recognized enough of the concepts to get a glimmer: and it is stunning. Here is Einstein himself, deriving E=mc2 in paper 4; so briefly, so lucidly (although another reader from California seems to have missed it). Paper 3 on special relativity is, even to this nonscientist, dazzling.

The Heart of the Matter

As a retired physicist I have taken great interest in the history of science, especially the times around the turn of the twentieth century when so many new ideas were put forward which have the basis of quantum mechanics and our current thinking from cosmology to quarks. This little volume is recommended either for bedtime reading or more serious study. The personal history reveals aspects previously unknown to me and the five papers themselves, in their original form, demonstrate Einstein's wonderful insightfulness and ability to make use of every aspect of a problem. Tney are a bit heavy going in themselves, and the mathematics is not for everyone, but what else would one expect from a distillation of so much into so relatively few words. I recommend this book to both the scintist and the layman who seeks a better understanding of these momentous mental leaps.

This book is a compilation of five important papers including Albert Einstein's dissertation, all published in Annalen der Physik the year 1905. The papers are;

(1) "A new determination of molecular dimensions". Which is Einstein's dissertation.

(2) On the motion of Small particles Suspended in Liquids at Rest Required by the Molecular-Kinetic Theory of Heat. This is what is referred to as Brownian Motion.

(3) On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies. This is what is referred to as the special theory of relativity. This paper is to some degree a synthesis of work done by H.A. Lorentz and Henri Poincare, which is common in science (and Lorentz is given his fair due).

(4) Does the Inertia of a Body Depend on Its Energy Content? This is essentially E = mc� and is an extension of the aforementioned paper.

(5) On a heuristic Point of View Concerning the Production and Transformation of Light. This is his paper on the photo electric effect and the quantum hypothesis. This is what Einstein got his Nobel price for. However, both (2) and (3) above are often considered to be Nobel Prize work.

The way I see it, these papers are of great historical value and it is awesome to be able to read the originals. However, I do not recommend this book as a good introduction to any of this material. As an engineering physics student I encountered most of the content of these papers in a more complete and clearer format. For example, the special theory of relativity is explained better in many text books on physics. Remember these papers are research papers not educational texts. That does not mean that I endorse the many non-mathematical popularizations of the topic that often end up misleading the reader. I should add, however, that in many texts on the special theory of relativity its foundation in electrodynamics is lost or downplayed, so reading the original will remind the student where it really came from.

I was surprised to see how the formula K0 - K1 = Lv�/ (2V�) was derived. This formula states the change in the kinetic energy of a body emitting radiation with energy L/2 in each direction. An implicit approximation (K = mv�/2, classic kinetic energy) was cancelled out by a MacLaurin/Taylor expansion and a corresponding approximation (when dropping terms). This is not wrong, and the proof is still valid, but it seems unnecessary to use approximations from classical mechanics when it is just as easy to make do without them. In any case from this formula it is concluded that when a body that emits the energy L in the form of radiation, then its mass decreases by L/V�, or E = mc� ("V" is "c" plus classic formula above).

However, the formula E = mc� can be easily derived directly from the special theory of relativity without any approximation, which he did at a later date. You integrate E = F S (where S is distance) using the relativistic formulas for force and mass. In any case the paper proves the genial insight that "that the mass of a body is a measure of its energy content", which is worth perhaps yet another Nobel Prize. It is also short paper.

I can add that Einstein's opus magnum, the general theory of relativity, came much later 1915/1916. Some other huge achievements were "stimulated emission" the principle behind the laser, Bose-Einstein statistics, and relativistic cosmology. In addition he also did the following, critical opalescence, the geometrization of physics, unified field theory, the EPR paradox, the Einstein refrigerator, a refrigerator without any moving parts, and much more. So 1905 was a very good start, a miracle year, but still just the beginning.

Anyway, reading the originals is thrilling. It is recommended reading to anyone who is literate in physics, and also recommended to anyone who would like to have these master pieces in his library.
