Read it ONLY if you intend to read the entire series

I received a free copy of this book by the author for a good faith, honest review. Here are my thoughts on the book:

The Good...

The Caves of Etretat, Book Two of Four: The Four Books of Etretat was more exciting than book one and many of the dialogue issues I had with book one have been worked out in this book. I was also intrigued by the unfolding mystery of the caves.

I enjoyed the use of dream imagery to aid Paul Sirenne in his unraveling of the clues LeBlanc left for him to solve and I thought adding the monks and the various Watcher groups into the story added a great bit of intrigue.

The Not-so-good...

Although there was plenty of action in this book, there was also still a lot of tedious information to go through.

The biggest problem I had with the mystery of locating the books was the number of specific chess references. I suppose if you enjoy, or at least understand the game of chess, these parts would be easily absorbed, but for me, someone who knows very little about the nuances of the game, I found it difficult to wade through. In fact, it threw me out of the story and made it too easy to put the book down.

I was also a bit irked by Paul Sirenne's alternating reticence and seeming egotism. Granted, the hero has been pushed into a role he doesn't really want, so his reticence is understandable. However, there are moments when he throws of his usual persona of working with his team and begins ordering people around like some kind of "lone cowboy." The change was confusing because it felt like he was going against his nature.

While I'm sure it wasn't intended, the Americans in the story made me laugh. They were more or less caricatures of every movie I've seen where the military decides to go in with guns blazing because their motto seems to be "Shoot first. Ask questions later." There were no redeeming qualities to these characters, no reason to feel they were in any way justified in their thinking.

I also found the Weismuller Recollections unnecessary to the story being told. They were very interesting, but they seem to have little bearing on the present day action of the main story.

The Overall...

While there is a lot more action and believable dialogue, I would only recommend The Four Books of Etretat: Book Two of Four (Volume 2) by Matt Chatelain if you plan to finish the entire series because it will be necessary to understand books three and four.

Had fun..

Before writing the review, I will have to admit that I haven't read the first book in this series, so I have to guess some things on my own to understand.

Paul, the protagonist of the novel, and his team is in on an adventure to locate a particular cave, which has been searched by many in vain, in history. Even if someone manages to find the cave, they don't stay alive to tell its tale. So, such a dangerous task is upon Paul and his team. The caves are not seeked for decades because of anything materialistic..its the secret of immortality that draws the attention to the caves. Naturally, the adventure becomes even more dangerous.

It has been very engaging, fast-paced, thrilling and mysterious from the start. The constant puzzles only make it more fun. I found myself taking a pen and paper and trying to solve some of the codes and well, you know what..I always got them right (I shall take a peek or two..or more..to the next paragraphs, if I don't know how to solve them ;-) ).

Some scenes are so thrilling, that I was clutching my Kindle so badly with my face, only inches away from it. And to add to the emotions, there is some romance too.

There were too many characters in the book, and it was difficult to remember the names - but maybe, that was because I didn't read the first book. I loved Paul's team though - funny, loyal and intelligent. Well thought-out mystery and well-made characters!

Had fun.. I just regret not starting with the first book.

Inspirational

The reason I bought this book was that I had enrolled for Coursera's online study course, entitled HOW THINGS WORK, led by Prof Bloomfield. Students were not required to buy the book and the chapters relating to the course were available online. I really dislike reading large format books on a small glowing screen, so I borrowed it from the local library. Six weeks later, when the course was over, I felt I HAD to own the book. It offers a lucid and well-rounded appreciation of the principles of Physics. I was very pleased to be able to afford the paperback version and am delighted to have the most recent edition (the library's edition was maybe 2008).

Potential buyers need to understand that this is a text book, not a science popularizer. It is aimed at college-going students. As I did not study the sciences when I was in school and college, I have often wanted to make up the deficit in my understanding. HOW THINGS WORK is really very good for that. It is not intended for casual reading and it does require the reader to concentrate, to think through the many examples and to take notes. I am reading it slowly and expect to work at it over the next two years. Buying it is an investment in my understanding of the mechanics of reality.

To simply understanding the physical world around us...

I have bought this book because I want to deepen and enlarge my grasp of physics of everyday life, right after attending the Coursera Mooc, entitled « How Things Work », created and animated by Prof Bloomfield, the author of the book.

With this excellent textbook with just enough mathematics and a lot of enlightening illustrations, Pr Bloomfield shares his passion for the physics of everyday life and his desire to make it accessible to everyone.

The only default of this excellent book is it's price, but the page count is near 600.

Bloomfield does it differently.

Traditional physics books/courses operate like this: The first substantive chapter/unit introduces a few basic concepts. They are related to some real world examples and students then do word problems using these concepts. In the next chapter/unit, a few more concepts are introduced and related to the real world. Students do problems using those concepts. In the next chapter/unit, a few more concepts are introduced ... and so on until a fairly inclusive system is developed. The progression is logical but the whole exercise is somewhat abstract.

Bloomfield does it differently. He starts with a real world happening and asks, “How can this be explained using physics?” This requires a lot more physics a lot earlier. In fact, the first two chapters (90 pages of 600) expose the student/reader to most of what is normally covered in the first semester of an introductory physics course--more in some ways, since Bloomfield gives a great deal of attention to rotational motion. Many people will find this more interesting but it risks overwhelming the student/reader, like learning to swim by jumping into the deep end rather than slowly proceeding: breathing, floating, kicking, stroking, now put it all together.

There is also less math. Bloomfield seems to think that students learn better by working through why something is happening rather than working through word problems.

I found Bloomfield’s way of developing things fascinating. But I’m a high school physics teacher who already had a fairly good understanding of the underlying principles. Your mileage may vary.
