About the Author
About the Authors

Richard A. DeFusco, CFA, is an Associate Professor of Finance at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). He earned his CFA charter in 1999 and started CFA grading in 2000. He is a member of the Omaha-Lincoln Society of Financial Analysts, and serves on committees for the Association for Investment Management and Research. His primary teaching interest is investments and he coordinates the Cornhusker Fund—the student-managed investment fund at UNL. He has published a number of journal articles, primarily in the field of finance. He completed his bachelor’s degree in management science at the University of Rhode Island and doctoral degree in finance at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

Dennis W. McLeavey, CFA, is Vice President of Curriculum Development at the Association for Investment Management and Research. He obtained his CFA charter in 1990 and began CFA grading in 1995. During the early 1990s, he taught in the Boston University and the Boston Security Analysts’ CFA review programs. He subsequently served on the AIMR Council of Examiners and recently received an AIMR Ten-Year Certificate of Achievement for Continuing Education. Active in endowment fund management, he founded a student-managed fund at the University of Rhode Island and co-authored two college texts and several journal articles. He completed a doctorate in production management and industrial engineering at Indiana University in 1972, after studying economics for his bachelor’s degree at the University of Western Ontario in 1968.

Jerald E. Pinto, CFA, as principal of TRM Services, consults to corporations, foundations, and partnerships in investment planning, portfolio analysis, and quantitative analysis. Mr. Pinto previously taught finance at the NYU Stern School of Business after working in the banking and investment industries in New York City. He has lectured to business and government executives from the United States and abroad, and participates in the Society of Quantitative Analysts, Inc., and other forums. He holds an MBA from Baruch College and a Ph.D. in finance from the Stern School.

David E. Runkle, CFA, is Vice President and Research Manager at U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray. He has been an Adjunct Professor of Finance in the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota since 1989, where he teaches equity security analysis. He has consulted on valuation and financial performance since 1994. Before joining U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray, Runkle was a research officer at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. He has published more than 20 academic articles and has won a number of awards, including the Wriston Prize for Outstanding Teaching (Brown University), an Elija Watt Sells Award for outstanding performance on the Certified Public Accountant examination, and a four-star rating as an outstanding professor in the Business Week Guide to the Best Business Schools. He is a member of the Minnesota Society of Certified Public Accountants and was a member of the Candidate Curriculum Committee for AIMR. He received a B.A. in economics, summa cum laude! ! , from Carleton College and a Ph.D. in economics from M.I.T.

Difference between 2001 First edition and 2004 Second edition?

Given that the 2001 First edition is selling for $30 less used than the 2004 Second edition, is there a big difference between the 2 editions. Should I just save myself $30 and buy the first edition?

I randomly selected "3 stars" b/c I had to. I have no review of this book.

Think twice before buying

I have purchased this book because it was recommended reading for the CFA program.
Unfortunately, this book has really disappointed me. The author explains nothing but general statistics but attempts to add an "investment dimension" to his explanations. The writing style is anything but educational. The output is a unstructured, complicated and uncomprehensive text with examples that only add to your confusion. In many of the passages you get lost and don't understand what the author is trying to get across to you or where he is leading. The author frequently jumps from one topic to another and skips important information, not to mention the numerous printing errors in the text. I found myself struggling on one of the passages half an hour, when I finally decided to look up the same topic in the statistics book in the library. It explained everything in a matter of seconds.
Think twice before buying this book. Get ANY introductory business statistics text (e.g. Statistics for Management and Economics by Gerald Keller) - they ALL cover the SAME topics in a MUCH more understandable way.

A Christmas Carol

In a festive mood. F.A.H.E.T.G.D.S. ladies mount yet another asault on the classics with their stage version of A Christmas Carol. Enthusiasm their middle name, and with the virile support of stage-manager Gordon, the cast presents a dizzy array of characters from the Dickensian favourite (and a few which aren't) under the ever-battling leadership of Thelma and Mrs. Reece. Of course, no Farndale evening would be quite complete without those wayward touches of ingenuity for which the ladies are so justly famed, so, in truly sparkling for, Mrs. Reece engineers some novel audience participation while bravely contending with the chattily-intrusive PA system. And, a real Farndale First: two specially-composed songs provided unique, show-stopping opportunities for the ladies to wrap their vocal cords and feet around.

About the Author

Michel Mielnicki was born in 1927 in Wasilkow, a few kilometers from Bialystok in north-eastern Poland. After surviving the Holocaust, he emigrated to Canada where, from his home base in Montreal, he soon became known as "Mr. Michel", one of Canada’s premier fur fashion designers. He now makes his home in Vancouver, BC where he is involved in Holocaust education.

An important, compelling, and well written testimony

This is an important, interesting, compelling, and well written testimony by Mr.Mielnicki. It is the kind of work that will take one beyond the well known general statistics and facts of the holocaust, and also into the realm of the heart. In particular it is highly informative regarding events in the Bialystok Region, from which hundreds of thousands of Jewish people were murdered. I read it in one sitting, and paused only when in it's pages I unexpectedly found Mr. Mielnicki's first hand account of the destruction of my families town of Zabludow Poland on June 26th, 1941. I highly recommend this book. In fact,it is a book that in an ideal world would be read by everyone. It contains a very good introduction by Sir Martin Gilbert, and is well illustrated with maps, and interesting and well chosen photos. This is a book to own

Everyday Anti-Semitism Transformed into The Holocaust

Even in a world awash with Holocaust memoirs, this book is well worth reading. It is the stark story of a fifteen year-old boy, accustomed to anti-Semitism in Poland, but always asking "Why?", who finds himself witnessing the horrors of the brief 1939 German occupation of Bialystok in Eastern Poland, but then, in 1941, becoming caught up in the far more devastating second German invasion and its Polish collaboration.

Together with his family, he finds himself in the Bialystok ghetto which is a nightmare of Nazi murders and starvation. Then they are transferred to the Pruzany ghetto, and from there to the main death camp for Jews, Birkenau or Auschwitz II. Here his mother dies and his father is murdered; he loses contact with his sister and brother; he lives in permanent terror as a slave labourer, freezing, starving and often ill. From Birkenau he is sent to work as a slave in the huge I G Farben plant at Buna-Monowitz or Auschwitz III. From there he is is forced to travel to Mittelbau-Dora, the gigantic rocket-building facilities in the Hartz Mountains where thousands die daily, from exhaustion, illness, starvation, random beatings, dog attacks, and hanging by the SS for "fun." Finally he is sent to Bergen Belsen where thousands upon thousands of inmates are being deliberately starved to death, and he himself comes very close to dying before liberation by the British on 15 April 1945.

This book is exceptional, perhaps because it covers a very wide range of places and of human behaviours, and from beginning to end there is the persistent presence of one of the greatest evils our world has ever known: Anti-Semitism. Before the war, during the war, and most certainly after the war - it never ends. Which is why Martin Gilbert, in his introduction to the book, so wisely stresses the necessity of being eternally vigilant.

I recommend this book to anyone and everyone who would like to know more about the damage that millennia of anti-Semitism, originating in and with the Roman Catholic Church, have done to people who have wanted only to live in peace and contribute to the world around them.

The ultimate reference to emergency ultrasound

Whether you are new to emergency US or you run an emergency fellowship, this is the book for you. It was hard to imagine that the previous editions could be improved, but the authors have well and truly done it. Comprehensive, readable, with very high standards of schematics and ultrasound images, this book covers the breadth of ED US practice very well and goes into a great amount of depth in the always-popular areas of critical care and echocardiography. My copy is chained to the bookcase in our education office and there's always a queue to read it. Well done to the authors for an outstanding achievement. Cheers Justin Bowra, Sydney Australia

Great Book

If you're in sales-your gonna love this book. Many of these stories are classic sales stories about achieving sales success. I believe the best way to learn how to do anything is find a role model. Find someone who has done it. That what this book does. It shows you many real life examples of what really works in the sales business. Read, enjoy and apply them into your situation. Highly recommended.

Topics cover every facet of selling, and drawn from a wide variety of fields--but with universal applicability. Excellent vacation book for a salesman. Not heavy reading, but definitely heavy return on investment. Good gift.

Fascinating look at the actors, the plans and the gaffes that led to Brexit. Shipman interviewed extensively and provides an almost day-by-day in progress review of the run-up to Brexit. The players on display are shown at their brilliant best and their lewd, bumbling worst. A must-read for political junkies, those trying to make sense of internationalism in retreat, and those curious about the parallels between Brexit and Trumpism.

One of the best books I've ever read

One of the best books I've ever read, and, as a political work, in the league with Cramer's masterpiece "What it Takes" (the greatest book ever written on politics) and Caro's Lyndon Johnson series.

I've been following British politics since the 1990's and intensely since the 2000's. But I wondered whether 688 pages on the Brexit referendum was more than I needed. On the contrary, Shipman provides all the necessary context of Britain's long and tumultuous relationship with the European Union without lingering or engaging in tedium.

What follows is a gifted storyteller mining an epic drama for all of its narrative worth. Imagine a national referendum over the future of the country with fissures running through party lines and pitting leaders of the two major parties against one another.

Underlying this national battle is the psychodrama among a group of friends who attended Oxford in the 80's: Boris Johnson, who watched as his younger classmate David Cameron ascended to the leadership of the Conservative Party and the premiership ahead of him, who emerges as the front man of the Leave campaign, putting him on the path to being prime minister; Michael Gove, whose modest background affected the dynamic with his classmates Cameron and Johnson, found himself marginalized in the latter's government. Gove, who supplied much of the intellectual heft of the new Conservatives, would do the same for the Leave campaign. The interpersonal politics and personal history was just as interesting as the campaign itself, which cannot be understood without it.

Shakespeare wouldn't have dared to invent this story. Cameron, the young prince, never a Europhile, promises a referendum in order to win a General Election in 2015. The referendum fails, and his political career with it. In the retrospect of his amazing career, Europe was always there, waiting, to give him his greatest victory but also his final and fatal defeat.

How Leave wins, and the head Brexiteers lose the peace, is a story that deserved a book of this magnitude. I enthusiastically recommend it.
