About the Author

Michael Blue has been the pastor of The Door of Hope Christian Church since 1992. He also serves as the presiding prelate of the Christian Covenant Fellowship of Ministries. He is the recipient of several ecclesiastical and community service honors, and was awarded the distinction of Doctor of Humanities by Francis Marion University, his alma mater, in 2010. Bishop Blue is a disciple, husband, father, psalmist, and student of the Word.

Great instructional book

Building Credibility in Leadership is a great book for leaders in the secular and spiritual arenas. The information given provides great guidance to leaders of all ages and types. The development of leaders is one of the most important vehicles to ensure the continuation of an organization. It is a task that takes knowledge, skill and wisdom. This book offers it all!

Reading this book has assisted me in my personal and professional life as a Christian who operates in primary and secondary leadership roles as a minister, counselor, mentor and entrepreneur. Whether is in the walls of the sanctuary or the walls of the conference room, the wisdom, shared by Bishop Michael A. Blue Sr., can activate change in your scope and performance as a leader.

I purchased the e-version of BCIL because of its convenience. I am THOROUGHLY pleased with the product's content. Bishop Michael Blue is a prolific author and shares incredible insights in Leadership. The tools provided in the manuscript can be applied in several arenas such as churches, corporations, municipalities, social clubs and education. Starred Review. In this deft synthesis of scholarship, classicist Wells shows how the Byzantines exerted a profound influence on all neighboring civilizations. Concrete examples still exist that testify to that influence—such as Sant'Apollinare Nuovo in Ravenna, Italy—but this book focuses on the more ineffable products of culture that traveled from the Bosporus, influencing Western, Islamic and Slavic cultures. The story of Renaissance Europe's embrace of pagan learning is familiar, but Wells tells of a fascinating intellectual circuit that begins with the transmission of Greek learning to the newly powerful Arabs and leads to Averro�s's commentary on Aristotle, Aquinas's use of this commentary and finally to the Byzantine Cydones's translation of Aquinas in the 14th century. By then, the dominant Orthodox movement of Hesychasm deemed pagan learning incompatible with Christian faith, forcing many humanists to the Catholic West. Wells devotes much space to the Hesychasts and blames them for this betrayal of Greek heritage and for weakening the empire before its final collapse in 1453, but duly credits them with shaping the Russian Orthodox Church and positioning Moscow as the Third Rome. Wells begins his detailed book with a list of the major characters--51 of them, including humanists, monks, emperors, patriarchs of Constantinople, philosophers, historians, classicists, and prophets. The Byzantine Empire began in the early fourth century with the foundation of a new Christian capital, Constantinople, on the site of the old Greek city of Byzantium. It ended when the Ottoman Turks captured that city in 1453, making it the capital of their Islamic empire, which in territorial aspirations and imperial style essentially replaced the old Byzantine Greek Empire. Wells points out that more recent historical research has revealed a story of lasting achievement and vigorous expansion. He divides the book into three parts: "Byzantium and the West," discussing the Byzantine legacy to Western civilization; "Byzantium and the Islamic World," describing the rise of the Arab Islamic Empire on former Byzantine lands in the Middle East; and "Byzantium and the Slavic World," exploring the religious side of the Byzantine legacy. Fascinating reading

The previous reviewers have more or less agreed that this is an information-dense book, fitting a tremendous amount of knowledge into a compact narrative. I agree. I write only to add that the story it tells, in clear and elegant prose, is one that is almost unknown to the average educated American. The Roman Empire survived for over 1,000 years after the fall of Rome itself. The eastern portion of the Empire, governed from Constantinople, survived institutional weakness, the Persians, the Huns, the Goths, the Slavs, religious wars, almost a thousand years of attack from Islam, and the devastating impact of the Fourth Crusade that effectively destroyed the Empire as a major power, leaving only a shell of a state that weakened and diminished until the Turks finally captured the underpopulated and bravely but hopelessly defended city in 1453.

In a sense, the Eastern Empire was a buffer for the West. Without it, invasions from the east would likely have been more frequent and more consequential and the tide of Islam could well have entered Europe from the east as well as from the south.

The political narrative of the Empire is one full of tragedy and missed opportunities. The inability of the structure of its government to provide for peaceful, orderly succession (a common problem with several types of governments, including monarchies) and the amount of power held by the noble families meant that there was a great deal of political instability inherent in the Byzantine political system. This was increased by the importance of religion to the Byzantine civilization and the consequent destabilizing power of doctrinal wrangles (something almost inevitable with an orthodoctic religion). The riots over whether icons should be allowed or destroyed, the accession of emperors more devoted to religious study than maintaining the military forces that were all that stood between the empire and its many enemies, and the supreme suicidal follies that led to the disasters of Manzikert (where a substantial body of the army in effect stood by and watched as the Turks captured the emperor - a debacle that led ultimately to the loss of Anatolia and its transformation into the home of the Ottomans who finally annihilated the empire) and of the Fourth Crusade (in which a claimant to the imperial throne enlisted the Venetians to place him on the throne, a venture that led to the pillaging of the city and the destruction of the structure of the imperial government - a blow from which the empire never recovered.)

The cultural story, on the other hand, is one of preservation of the learning of ancient Greece and Rome and the carrying on of some of their traditions and inquiries. There is no single work that I know of that explores in detail the way that Byzantine philosophy, medicine, art, and creative writing moved forward from their Classical roots. To the extent that mainstream history notices such things, it notes Justinian's closure of the Academy in 529 and stops there. Leaving aside what Justinian actually did , see the discussion at [...] this ignores hundreds of years of learning and discussion.

Wells's book offers brief look into the richness of this culture and into the way it influenced its Western (primarily Italian), Slavic, and Islamic neighbors.

It was a great pleasure to read so well thought-out and well-written a book. Those with an interest in this little-known but fascinating part of history will probably devour it as if it was a novel. I did. I hope that Wells has an in-depth cultural history of the Eastern empire up his sleeve. (And, no, I'm not Wells, have never met him or communicated with him, and have never heard of him before this book.)

How the Byzantines preserved and spread western learning

Who actually saved Western Civilization? Authors have recently brought forth many claimants: the Irish, Islamic Spain, the Jews, homosexuals. One well-known author has written a semi-serious book titled "How the Plumber Saved Civilization". In "Sailing from Byzantium", Colin Wells makes a learned and convincing argument that the scholars of the Byzantine Empire deserve the true credit.

The subtitle "How a Lost Empire Shaped the World" may be an audacious one, but it gives the reader a good idea of just how comprehensive this small-format book intends to be. Most histories of Byzantium focus on either the military dynamics which slowly strangled the empire until only Constantinople remained and then itself fell to the Ottomans, or on the religious schism with the papacy that has not yet been closed. Wells treats those subjects well with fresh insights. But military and the religious divide play supporting roles to his true focus: the scholarly life of Byzantium and how it was spread to Italy, to Islam, to the Balkan nations and cultures, and, most vitally, to the emergent Russian power.

The author divides the book into three parts. In the first he covers both the preservation by Byzantine scholars of the fundamental works of Greek civilization and then the wave of humanist teachers that brought this learning to early Renaissance Italy. In his second section, Wells treats what was actually an earlier but not so permanent development: how the Arabs absorbed Byzantine learning as they conquered and settled in what had been Byzantine territory.

In Part III, the asserted civilizing power of religion takes a more dominant role as the author treats the interactions with the various Slavic migrations. His claim in the Introduction is that "the Byzantines turned the ... Slavs from uncivilized invaders into the great defenders of Orthodox Christianity." Of course the Russians were the most successful of these "Slavic invaders", and Wells' long discourse on how Russia came to be "the third Rome" could well be considered Part IV of the book.

While ideas and faiths are his main topics, Wells embodies and organizes his treatment by focusing on a long line of personalities. This is unavoidable, but the long stream of short biographical sketches of the key players, many of them unknown to non-specialists, could overwhelm. Thoughtfully, Wells has included for reference a list of "Major Characters" and a "Concurrent Timeline". This latter is especially helpful, as the text itself pays only minor heed to chronology. There is also a fine Bibliography, covering both primary and secondary sources. There are nine good maps.

Wells does not pretend to original scholarship in this book, but for most readers it will present many new and thought-provoking facts and interpretations.

A final note: although military history is not the main thrust of "Sailing from Byzantium", it cannot fail but touch on such events as they played such a large role in how Byzantine culture rose, spread, and fell. The reader may at times wish for a more comprehensive focus on this aspect. If so, I can recommend "Byzantium at War" by John Haldon.

Neglected History

For many of us in the West, Byzantium is an exotic mystery. Colin Wells opens up this mystery by outlining the crucial role of Byzantium in transmitting ancient Greek culture to three civilizations: the West, the Slavic East, and Islam. There is much in this history that is of relevance today as we reflect on the different roles played by these three civilizations that were shaped by Byzantium. Yes, the myriad of unfamiliar names and places are at times overwhelming; but Wells provides a list of major characters in his history to help the reader, along with a chronology and plenty of maps. For me and I suspect many others, this book opens up a previously neglected but crucial part of our history.

X. J. Kennedy is an acclaimed poet, children s author, college teacher, and textbook author. He has taught freshman composition at the University of Michigan; the University of North Carolina, Greensboro; and Tufts University. Since 1966, more than 2 million students have treasured his introductory literature texts and The Bedford Reader, coedited with Dorothy M. Kennedy and Jane E. Aaron, now in its ninth edition.Dorothy M. Kennedy is a writer and editor whose articles and reviews have ppeared in both professional and academic journals. She has taught composition at the University of Michigan and Ohio University and, with X. J. Kennedy, is the recipient of the NCTE Teacher's Choice Award for Knock at a Star: A Child's Introduction to Poetry.Marcia F. Muth teaches, writes, and edits. She has taught first-year writing at The Ohio State University and other introductory courses at St. Peter's College (Englewood Cliffs). Her many writing workshops have been sponsored by Fordham University, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, and currently the School of Education and Human Development at the University of Colorado Denver. Great book that I ordered used from amazon that came in great condition. Helps with my wife's college classes and makes it easy for writing assignments.Learning proper sentence structure and writing is a key thing in today's workforce and not everyone has what it takes but you can learn to be a good one. A+ seller and great items.

Well packed and in and even better condition

Why the book was listed as "acceptable" is beyond me. The pages of the book are in almost-new condition. Yes, there is some wear and tear to the outside but it is within the normal bounds of use. The the binding is not affected. All pages are secure. There are no stray marks. The book was well packaged. If this seller offers an item in the future that I need, I certainly won't think twice about purchasing.

I have two complaints.

1) I purchased this book 'With Reader' explicitly which was affirmed in the label. It is, however, not 'With Reader' and I didn't have time to return it seeing as though I started classes the same week. This mistake is understandable considering it may be insignificant to some but I am still disappointed.

2) Although this book was used, there was aslo no indication in the description that a half inch was CUT off both the front and back covers of the book.

Fans of comic artist Alex Ross enjoy his detailed and highly realistic art work, and here they are in for a major treat, for JUSTICE dishes out a non stop, superlative serving of his best work from cover to cover. Expect to see some serious superhero action with the Legion of Doom, led by Lex Luthor and Braniac pitted against the heroes from Justice League of America, including Superman, Green Lantern, Captain Marvel, Wonder Woman and many, many more.

This edition covers JUSTICE no. 1 to 12 and is a definite bang for your buck, housed in a sturdy hard cover.

This book collects the #5-8 of the ongoing Jusitce maxi-series written by Jim krueger (Earth X) and illustrated by Doug Braithwaite and Alex Ross.

The story picks up immediately after volume one of Justice where the JLA is systemetically being taken apart. The heroes begin to somewhat regain their footing but the battle is far from over. We find out that there is even a bigger play on hand than what appears. Batman is being mind-controlled, so are several members of the JLA. But thorugh the intervention of second tier or reserve JLA members such as Captain Marvel, the heroes narrowly escape the clutches of the Legion of Doom. And speaking of Captain Marvel, he has a prominent presence in this book. His powers and representation here is very similar to that in another story, Kingdom Come (which should come as no surprise). But not soon have the heroes regained their composure do they find out that their loved ones, i.e. Aquaman's son have been kidnapped. The battle lines have been drawn and the JLA and Legion of Doom are ready to go at it, which one can assume will take place in the next volume...and I for one can't wait.

The art team continues their excellent work. I love the scenes where Captain Marvel swoops in to save Superman and with the ease he disposes of Bizzaro, Metallo, Parasite and Grundy. Since, Parasite took Superman's strength, he also gained his weaknesses and Capt. Marvel exploits that by ripping out Metallo's kryptonite heart and using it against Parasite...awesome. I also liked the little banter that Superman had with Capt. Marvel after they recues the Flash whose own metabolism is killing him.

Superman: Do you have any money on you?

Capt. Marvel: Billy has maybe ten bucks, why?

Supes: Barry has to eat. An there's an all-you-can-eat buffet about 50 miles from here. It's $5.99. I hate asking...but my wallet got burned up when you threw me into the sun.

Capt.: This is going to be unfair to the buffet, isn't it?

Like I said, the writing is great.

As a bonus feature of sorts, the book features an intro by Doug Braithwaite which was very poignant. He writes about how he read the JLA as a kid and has the same enthusiasm as he pencils Justice. There is also more files of of profiles presented for heoroes and villains from Batman's computer. You also get a look at several pencilled pages.

In case it didn't coem through, I love this book. The way the story is written is vintage Superfriends type cartoon which has been matured to certain extent. It's an excellent read and I am very enthusiactic to see how it will end. So, do yourself a favor and pick this up. You won't regret it.

Fun, but collapses under its own weight

JUSTICE is a difficult book for me to review, as I have such mixed feelings about it - perhaps more so than any other comic. Conceived by Alex Ross, it brings in co-writer Jim Krueger and penciller Doug Braithwaite to present what is essentially the Super Friends vs. The Legion of Doom, albeit with a much darker tone than the Saturday morning cartoon. Over the years, Ross has proven himself to be not only a spectacular artist, but a pretty good idea man. When those ideas were developed by writers such as Kurt Busiek and Mark Waid, the results could be brilliant; however, Ross' collaborations with Krueger have resulted in unfocused and drawn-out stories that don't seem to know when to end. Based on that, I had planned on avoiding this 12-issue limited series, but a free copy of the softcover edition changed that.

The story begins with the destruction of the Earth, despite the best efforts of the Justice League. It is slowly revealed that this is a dream shared by the League's enemies, apparently foreshadowing a great disaster brought about by Earth's over-reliance on its heroes. As a result, the villains decide to use their substantial powers to solve world problems and empower humanity. Utopia appears to be at hand, but at the heart of it, the heroes know that something isn't right. The compromising of their secret identities and subsequent attempts on their lives lead them to uncover an insidious plan that, frankly, only ended up confusing me.

At the heart of JUSTICE is Alex Ross' love of the Super Friends, and as such, we get classic '70s versions of our favorite heroes and villains; not just the core Super Friends, but also supporting members, as well as the Doom Patrol and the Metal Men. The characterizations are excellent, and the creators do get some neat ideas onto the page. Unfortunately, these various bits are mired in a tedious narrative that ups the ante at every turn, so that by the time I reached chapter 8, I was ready for the story to end. There are so many ways in which Krueger and Ross could have streamlined this story, eliminating some dead ends and tightening the plodding conclusion. Artwise, it's difficult to appreciate Braithwaite's contribution. He is an accomplished artist in his own right, and I'm a huge fan of his, so it would have been nice if his style weren't completely hidden by Ross' paints. On the other hand, Braithwaite's jarring and awkward layouts really make it difficult to follow what's happening. Cuts between scenes are not handled well - they are extremely abrupt, to the point that I had to constantly go back to make sure that I hadn't missed a page. Some objective oversight of this project might have helped to smooth things out, but I guess editors are hesitant to say "no" when Ross is involved.

I can't help but to compare the overall product with the grand mess that is Marvel's Secret Wars, as there are numerous similarities between the two (even the toys!), but with JUSTICE, I at least enjoyed the better part of the ride. This was such an ambitious project, and it does fare much better than most of Krueger and Ross' collaborations, but ultimately, JUSTICE comes across as an indulgent pet project of the creators, rather than something done for the readers.

I really wanted to love this book.

I really wanted to love this book. I've been a big fan of Jacqueline Novogratz ever since I started reading about the Acumen Fund's work while serving in the Peace Corps in central Africa. In the years since, I've been working for a global health organization in several countries and read up on developments in this field regularly - and like Novogratz, I'm a UVA grad! And getting my MBA! I thought I'd eat this book up.

What first struck me was that this book is much less about the developing world (to say nothing of the Acumen Fund) than it is about Novogratz herself. The author is not a gifted writer, as others have pointed out, and the constant attempts at vivid descriptions of scenes of Africa and India become very tiresome. They also lend to the strong theme of the author's utter naivete. Novogratz seems to be constantly shocked or surprised when something she tries doesn't work, and nevertheless repeats the same self-sure pattern of presumption on her next "project."

I was an innocent abroad once too. The developing world, especially Africa, has a steep learning curve... but it's one that the author, from her luxury accommodations in the capital, jet-setting between countries as an overpaid ADB "consultant," hobnobbing with expat (read: white) elites in tennis clubs and fancy restaurants where local Kenyans/Rwandans/Tanzanians/etc. are nonexistent, never seems to overcome. She's exactly the type of foreign "expert" which she skewers early in the book (and whom exasperates the rest of us in this field). My eyes became sore from so much rolling, hearing her wax eloquent about local people and cultures to which she clearly has little true exposure or understanding of.

I give it two stars because many of the lessons she discusses - about accountability, the power of business in bettering people's lives, instilling a sense of dignity through economic security - are sound. I just wish she would talk more about business and less about, say, how shocked - just shocked! - she was when she was mugged while jogging alone in Tanzania, or about how she feels about the Rwandan genocide.

good stories; lackluster writing

Jacqueline Novogratz's writing is not particularly elegant or original, but her stories are powerful. She has worked all over the developing world as a consultant who helps poor women start businesses. She is a strong believer in the transformative power of capitalism.

She could be right about that. But some of her stories, particularly the ones about Africa, seem to point more to the rampant corruption that ruins attempts to improve lives than to the small successes that microfinancing sometimes creates. Her hopefulness and faith in people, despite this endemic corruption, is commendable, but at times it seems a bit romantic, although she often decries this over-optimistic romanticism in other Western development workers.

Her stories about Rwanda are the most riveting. She worked in Rwanda in the 1980s before the genocide and then returned often after the genocide to find her friends and hear their stories. The stories, not unexpectedly, are harrowing. Many women lost almost all their relatives and children; one was in prison for inciting genocide.

Her meditation on the efficacy of bed nets to prevent malaria is thoughtful and convincing, and she discusses honestly the pros and cons of selling versus giving away bed nets.

The reader comes away with a detailed picture of life in the developing world, in all its beauty and horror, and with admiration for the people who keep trying to help despite the enormous obstacles.

How to change the world

There are so many things in the world that want changing -- how does a young, committed college graduate decide where to begin? Jacqueline Novogratz was an international credit banker on the fast track with Chase Manhattan Bank, but her work in Brazil showed her that big commercial banks had nothing to offer the poor. Having always planned to change the world, she turned her back on high finance and took a position in West Africa with a nonprofit microfinance organization. The Blue Sweater: Bridging the Gap Between Rich and Poor in an Interconnected World is author Novogratz's own story of her love affair with that work.

Her early days in Nairobi were not a great success. The project was intended to provide microloans to poor women, but the local women leading the project did not appreciate a brash young American who knew nothing of their culture. Sidelined from any role in that enterprise, she wound up in East Africa where she developed a deep commitment to the women of Rwanda. Knowledge of banking principles was not enough to assure success, and she gradually attained the insights necessary for her work to succeed. Rwandan women were traditionally excluded from economic rights, and large international aid projects offered them nothing they could use. Novogratz soon learned that if you help a woman, you help a family. Her goal was to provide microloans AND the skill set necessary to start and grow business. The concerns of the women were food, clothing, and shelter for their families, clean water, basic health care, irrigation for the crops they chose to grow. Aid that fosters these basic services is a necessary adjunct to the development of income, if families are to lift themselves out of poverty.

Novogratz's trial-and-error stories are frank and sometimes funny, but the reader is constantly aware that a young woman alone in Africa is living on the thin edge of danger. After more than two years, during which time she formed strong bonds of friendship and established important local institutions in Rwanda, she was aware that she needed to know more about leadership to go further. She returned to the U.S. to attend business school at Stanford, and took a position with the Rockefeller Foundation where she established the Philanthropy Workshop, a four-week course offering training in the principles of strategic giving; and The Next Generation Leadership, a program for the development of leaders. She then founded and currently runs the Acumen Fund, a nonprofit venture fund for investment and development in the world's poorest regions. "Patient capital" is their term for bridging the divide between traditional charity and traditional business investment, using principles of moral leadership and empowerment.

Novogratz knew from childhood that she wanted to change the world. Easier said than done! But walk with her beside women who have nothing but dreams, hear the first-hand horror of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, read about well-meaning but meaningless aid projects, and experience a hundred little epiphanies about leadership and economic development; and you'll begin to believe in the possibility as well as the need. "The West wants easy answers for modern atrocities, revolving around ancient tribal hatreds, international aid gone astray, or political corruption. The real world does not oblige," Novogratz writes. The world wants to punish and prevent "...atrocities that can come only from a deep-seated fear of the Other in our midst; and such fear is fueled in a world where the rich feel above the system and the poor feel entirely left out."

This is a book about life-changing issues. It's a fascinating read and I recommend it wholeheartedly.

About the Author
Joanne B. Ciulla, who gained a Ph.D. in philosophy from Temple University, is Professor and Coston Family Chair in Leadership and Ethics at the Jepson School of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond. She is one of the founding faculty of the Jepson School, which is the only school in the world to offer an undergraduate degree in Leadership Studies. Ciulla was also the first to hold the UNESCO Chair in Leadership Studies at the United Nations University International Leadership Academy, where she directed and designed leadership development programs for emerging leaders from all over the world. Previously, she has held academic appointments at the Harvard Business School, the Wharton School, Oxford University, and La Salle University. At Wharton she designed and taught the first required business ethics module for MBA students. Ciulla is on the editorial boards of THE BUSINESS ETHICS QUARTERLY, and THE JOURNAL OF BUSINESS ETHICS. She is the editor of the series, "New Horizons in Leadership," for Edward Elgar Publishing, Ltd. Ciulla is a member of the Board of Directors of the Desmond Tutu Peace Foundation. She is also a consultant who helps design and develop programs on ethics and leadership for universities, companies, and government agencies in the U.S. and abroad.

Psychology of Ethics and Leadership

Excellent thought provoking work on ethics and leaders. The author uses a combination of case studies with historical works to outline the different facets of ethics. A must read for someone who is in process of designing a training program on ethics for a company or who is interested creating a code of ethics for an organization.

If you want to do all of your thinking for yourself...

...then this is the book for you. It contains all of the pertinant and influential work on ethics, justice, virtue, and duty. Just don't expect to be spoon-fed the learning points. It is comprehensive, and seeks to provide original works to engage both sides of issues. If you're not familiar with reading drawn-out Victorian sentences, or ancient Chinese writing, it might take a while to digest. The case studies are a high note, because they are simpler to get your brain around.
