Courtney E. Martin is a senior correspondent for the American Prospect and an editor of Feministing.com. A 2002 recipient of the Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics, she is the author of Perfect Girls, Starving Daughters and coauthor of The Naked Truth. Her writing has appeared in Mother Jones, Newsday, the Christian Science Monitor, and on Huffington Post and Alternet, among other publications. She lives in Brooklyn.

DIA Portrays Idealism--Way to Go!

I devoured Martin's latest work of non fiction, "Do It Anyway," because of her accuracy and the way it speaks to my generation. I truly admire her work because she is a social activist in her own right--choosing to write 200 pages about other activists is social change in itself. She uses her power and privilege in order to bring attention to some serious issues at hand. It is a wake up call for all of us. I also admire the idealism within this work. I think that idealism can often be described as naive (as said by Publisher's Weekly), but it's actually not something to be ashamed of. Idealism means hoping for the best outcome and owning feelings of optimism--which is exactly what we need in our country right now. Thanks, Ms. Martin!

Revealing portraits

Courtney Martin provides the reader with revealing profiles of eight young activists. Martin digs behind the actions to uncover what motivates these young people to devote themselves to making a difference in the world. Most of the activists portrayed are not seeking to change the world on a grand scale. Instead they are taking action within their communities to have an impact where they live. The portraits reveal each person's struggle to find and live his or her calling. Martin describes the false starts many of the individuals experienced on their way to finding their cause. Even then, many continue to wrestle with doubt.

This is not a book on how to become an activist or how to do community organizing. It is a volume of human stories of people who care about how they use their lives for the common good. Martin's profiles assure us that there are young people who deeply care about their fellow humans. The book may be most useful to other young adults who are searching how to make a difference in their communities. Martin avoids romanticizing the activists she profiles. She reveals the struggles, doubts, and faults of those she writes about while also holding up their gifts, commitment, and courage.

The book is well written. The people profiled are portrayed in their humanness and, as a result, can simultaneously evoke admiration and annoyance in the reader. Do not expect an activist manual. Do expect insight into the difficultly of becoming an activist. Then be inspired to do it anyway.

Through inspiring stories of real people fulfilling their own need to do something and meeting the need they see in the world Courtney lights a fire in all of us. This book is a great read for teens and adults, who want to know what it actually looks like to make change happen. The book is beautifully written, heartfelt and smart -- and, will get under your skin - pushing you just a little, to do something!

About the Author
Dr. Gerald Keller is Emeritus Professor of Business at Wilfrid Laurier University, where he taught statistics, management science, and operations management from 1974 to 2011. He also taught at the University of Toronto, the University of Miami, McMaster University, the University of Windsor, and the Beijing Institute of Science and Technology. In addition to consulting with banks on credit scoring and credit card fraud, Dr. Keller has conducted market surveys for the Canadian government on energy conservation. His books include BSTAT, 2e, APPLIED STATISTICS WITH MICROSOFT EXCEL, ESSENTIALS OF BUSINESS STATISTICS (co-authored), AUSTRALIAN BUSINESS STATISTICS (co-authored), and STATISTICS LABORATORY MANUAL EXPERIMENTS USING MINITAB. Dr. Keller also has been published in OMEGA, IIE TRANSACTIONS, DECISION SCIENCES, INFOR, ECONOMICS LETTERS, and ARCHIVES OF SURGERY.

Dr. Brian Warrack: After teaching in the Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration at the University of Alberta, Dr. Warrack joined Wilfrid Laurier University, where he has taught courses in corporate finance, investment management, statistics, and decision analysis. Basic an clearly understandable

This book covers a wide area of fields necessary for business and economic students. It also explains how to go on if necessary conditions are violated. Time-series analysis, which is very important for economic students, are not covered to the extent as other topics, but it nevertheless gives a good introduction of other statistical concepts necessary for understanding following books on time series analysis. For my opion there are a little bit to much exercises than necessary, for an autodidactic study but enough for class room work. A very fine feature is that there never come up terminologies which has not been discussed before and one can use MS-Excel.

My Bible

This book became my statistics bible. After never attending any statistics classes at the University, I was suddenly forced to work with multiple regressions at work. This book helped me understand all about statistics that I needed for my business purposes. The examples are very helpfull to understand what the tests actually do and how you can solve your own inference problems. I read the whole book in about 10 days (2 hours a day) at the beach and now work mainly with the overviews in the last chapters when I have a problem to solve at work.

A very good introduction to statistics

I found the book remarkably clear and instructive. It was the textbook for an MBA statistics course. Fortunately the book was much better than the teacher, so that by primarily ignoring the confused musings of the professor, and reading and working the exercises in the book, I was able to get an A in the class, and, more importantly, understand statistical principles and applications. I worked with the 6th edition. I now use the book as a reference for my work activities as well.

Why would anyone write the names of places in red on a pink background? It's completely unreadable -- an ungroovy In fact, why would anyone use a pink background for a city map? The street numbers are incredibly tiny and unreadable, and even major intersections and landmarks -- Independence Monument -- are almost impossible to find They apparently saved a lot on the graphic design, because while there is some good text descriptions, the map itself is almost useless. Save your money.

I own several of Aaron Frankel's maps. They're not only good maps, but also clever and humorous. Granted, Aaron is a middle aged male and so am I, but no matter what your age or gender, if you don't take yourself too seriously, this Cambodia map will get you around Siem Reap and Phnom Penh without issues.

I didn't find the map very useful. There are a number of locally produced maps and city guides that I found to be much more useful than this one. I found the quality of the map to be good. As with most maps, including the ones in the popular guidebooks, they are no better than the ones that can be found at most guesthouses when you are in a larger city.

Easy, whimsical picturebook story

Otto can do many things, from playing to being kind to frogs - but he cannot swim; and for an otter, this is a big problem requiring a little help - from a sister. This easy, whimsical picturebook story will appeal to any child tackling swimming skills, and is also a positive story of how a 'can do' and troubleshooting attitude can help, as well as thoughtful siblings and friends. Parents and libraries will find it appealing to young readers.

Completely adorable!

Oh my gosh! This is so cute!!

It's a fairly simple story (an otter that can't swim), and pretty predictable. But that doesn't take away from the sweetness of the story and the absolutely adorable pictures!! It's somewhat like the "Little Engine That Could" idea, that you can do anything so long as you set your mind to it - only the moral in this book focuses on taking things is tiny steps to reach your goal.

Totally worth the read, if for nothing else but the pictures!
