Amazon.com Review
Unless your species evolved sometime after 1993 when Jurassic Park hit theaters, you're no doubt familiar with this dinosaur-bites-man disaster tale set on an island theme park gone terribly wrong. But if Speilberg's amped-up CGI creation left you longing for more scientific background and ... well, character development, check out the original Michael Crichton novel. Although not his best book (get ahold of sci-fi classic The Andromeda Strain for that), Jurassic Park fills out the film version's kinetic story line with additional scenes, dialogue, and explanations while still maintaining Crichton's trademark thrills-'n'-chills pacing. As ever, the book really is better than the movie. --Paul Hughes
From Publishers Weekly
An island off Costa Rica will soon be the world's most ambitious theme park--a dinosaur preserve. A visionary financier's biotechnology company has succeeded in cloning these extinct reptiles. Fifteen different species, presumably incapable of breeding, are now placidly roaming around, but Jurassic Park's resident mathematician, an expert in chaos theory, predicts that the animals' behavior is inherently unstable. When a rival genetics firm attempts to steal frozen dinosaur embryos, things go haywire. Two cute American kids, eight-year-old Tina and 11-year-old Tim, a safari guide from Kenya and a Denver paleontologist set things aright--almost. Though the dinosaurs here are more interesting than the people, Crichton ( The Andromeda Strain ) ingeniously interweaves details of genetic engineering, computer wizardry and current scientific controversy over dinosaurs to fashion a scary, creepy, mesmerizing techno-thriller with teeth. It can be read as a thought-provoking fable about technological hubris and the hazards of bioengineering. 150,000 first printing; Literary Guild main selection; movie rights sold to Steven Spielberg/Universal Pictures .

From School Library Journal
YA-- Massive sums spent on biotechnology, 24 Cray supercomputers sent to a fog-shrouded island off Costa Rica, and expert advice bought from paleontologists have combined to produce the most incredible amusement park of all time. Jurassic Park is inhabited by real dinosaurs, over 200 of them, all cloned from snippets of ancient DNA. Crichton is a master at blending technology with fiction, creating a tale all the more terrifying because it could happen. And the terror is heightened when dinosaurs escape from their barricaded area on the island, an event occasioned by the foolhardiness of relying on technology to control their range. Readers can just imagine being caught in the open with these dinosaurs after there's been a massive power outage on the island. Suspense, excitement, and good adventure pervade this book--and few YAs will be able to resist it.

One of the greatest books I've ever read
By Brian
Welcome to Jurassic Park. I'm sure that most of you have seen the movie or read the book. But if you haven't -- Jurassic Park is a "theme" park that's main attractions are genetically brought back Dinosaurs. No animatronics or misdirection. These are real flesh and blood dinos. The unfortunate part about using real animals is that they are unpredictable. And you can guess where this unpredictability goes.
The narration for the 25th Anniversary Edition of Jurassic Park was done by Scott Brick who just absolutely blows this away. It has to be hard to narrate such an iconic book when it has a cult following and when there is a movie based off of it too. You would already have voices in your head for some of the characters. But Brick just crushes it. He gave me goosebumps numerous times in his reading of this.
This book has a lot of memory tied into it with me. It is one of the first books I ever remember not going outside to play to read more of. I think it was one of the first books I ever got on my own from the library (to which I've later owned numerous copies over the years). Jurassic Park was the first book that made me realize that a good book would keep you entertained. A great book would make you forget that there was the world around you.
Jurassic Park the novel is probably one of the books I keep highest on my review pedestal. I was a little worried that going back to it more than 10-15 years after first reading it and having seen the movie probably 30 times that it wouldn't have the same edge. I couldn't have been more wrong. I knew that Crichton could write. I knew he was innovative, writing about powerful computers in books like Jurassic Park and Congo before they were even on the horizon. But I forgot just how good Crichton was at holding my attention.
Jurassic Park STILL gave me goosebumps years later. It still had me hiding under the covers. And wondering what would happen next. If you are one of those people who think, "is the book really that much better?" Yes, yes, yes. A thousand times over yes. You need to read this book. You will see how visionary Crichton was. You will also notice that pieces of ALL FOUR movies were picked from this novel (and if you pick up The Lost World After, you'll see even more). There are scenes in this that made it into every movie that was associated with the Jurassic Park namesake.
I could write for days about this book, but know that this 25th Anniversary Edition is incredible. Scott Brick brings this book to life, which when you're reading it makes for some scary stuff! Please do yourself a favor and check this book out. I promise you won't regret it.

Intense Thrill Ride
By Admiralu
Having seen the film, I thought I was familiar with the book. WRONG. This excellent novel stands on its own and I can't help but wonder how the film would've been if they had stuck to the book. I love the book. No romance and sentiment, and the little girl is annoying as hell. Crichton really has a flair for storytelling and backs it up with the necessary science to boot. John Hammond is an elitist snob who gets his comeuppance, a major change from Spielberg's film. The film kept some of the storyline and only a few characters and made the rest family-friendly. The Book stands on it's own as a work of art and one hell of a book. I'm surprised that there is no audio book version of this work, as there is one for the sequel The Lost World. Whether you have seen the film or not you definitely should read Jurassic Park. So many of the themes still ring true in this day and age. So good, I will have to read it again! A must have for any collection.

I'll be satisfied. I'll be honest with you though
By Amazon Customer
Do not push off reading this book because you saw the movie! Steven Spielberg does a solid job at telling the story of the book without spoiling the book. I've never read a Crichton (I can't even pronounce his last name) book before this one. I've seen almost every movie that was inspired from his books though, so indirectly, I'm a fan of the guy. I had no idea how complex his story telling ability was. I have three more of his books lined up just waiting in my "Runner Ups for next read" list. I am so pumped to read them! If they're half as entertaining as this book was, I'll be satisfied.
I'll be honest with you though, it is very slowed paced the first 100+ pages, but once you get passed those pages, it shoots off like a freaking rocket and just won't let you jump off.
I felt like it was my duty to finish this book.
My only complaint is the epilogue, I wish it wasn't in the book. The chapter before the Epilogue ends the book beautifully. You felt an emotional connection with the characters, then the epilogue happens. I won't spoil anything other than the epilogue opens up for 'The Lost World' to begin, I feel obligated now to finish the story. My next read will have to be the sequel to this great story.
