About the Author
Marilyn J. Sorensen, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and consultant in Portland, Oregon with over 21 years in private practice, specializing in issues of self-esteem and relationships. Dr. Sorensen is also the co-founder of the Northwest Women's Studies Institute which provides workshops, consultation, and training for businesses and the general public. She was honored as a professional in the 1996-97 national directory of Who's Who in Executives and Professionals.

THIS BOOK COULD CHANGE YOUR LIFE

If you suffer from low self-esteem, this book will change your life. It is excellent for a number or reasons. First, it has a quiz you can take that will give you an indication of whether or not you suffer from low self-esteem. From there, it helps you figure out why you have low self-esteem. Then the book helps you identify how your low self-esteem manifests itself in your life. From there you learn how to change your way of thinking. One of the best features of the book is that it provides examples of how someone with low self-esteem reacts (note that I said "reacts", and not "responds") in certain situations. Then, for sake of comparison, it gives an example of how a person with healthy self-esteem would act in the same situation. The exercises at the end of each chapter are very helpful, and I highly recommend that you do them all and then discuss your answers with a qualified therapist. The last chapter provides advice on how to pick a therapist. I also got the workbook and am going to work through that next. I can't say enough good things about this book. I wouldn't change a thing. I didn't think I would learn anything I didn't already know - was I wrong! Truly enlightening. Do not hesitate to buy this book.

One of the most important books I'v ever read

This is a life changing book for sure. Low Self-Esteem is so trivialized that most people just try not to pay much attention to it or follow simple advice given in magazines. What I didn't know is how much LSE affects every area of a person's life, like realtionships, professional life, being a parent (low self esteem passes on). There are so many emotional/mental issues a person can suffer from and we just tend to think about them as simple personality defects. Nobody thinks twice about them let alone link them to LSE.
I wanted to have healthy self esteem and not have to live with all that pain so I tried to buy the best possible book on the subject and started to research self-esteem books. That's when I find this one.
It was like a book written about and only for you and the problems you've always felt but didn't even know had names and didn't even know they are part of low self-esteem!
While it absolutely devastated me the first time I read this book and was painful to face the memories (cried a lot too), but managed to finish the book and it was absolutely worth it!

Also, at the end of each chapter there are writing excercises help you dig deep down and bring up long forgotten or even unrealized incidents from your past. Personally, they have been very helpful and a big first step but not enough to "cure" LSE. There is a companion Workbook which can be purchased separately and can be done along with this book. She suggests to read Breaking the Chain of LSE first then do the Workbook where at certain sections you will be redirected to this book. So you'll be working from the two together at times.
What I really liked was that the Author not only explains LSE very thoroughly in every day language but through stories as well. After the stories She often has a little section; "A note of comparison with those with healthy self-esteem" where she explains how a person with healthy self esteem would have reacted to that particular situtation in the story. I've find this very useful since I wondered many times in my life what would have been the appropriate behaviour/reaction on my part.

Make sure you have tissues and buy the workbook to make it more effective!

This book was recommended to me by my therapist, and it is kicking my tuckus in a very good way. Marilyn Sorensen gets deep into your psyche and provides effective exercises for you to help you work through your low self-esteem.
